Six People Swap Modern Life for Amish Living in New TLC Series

The TLC series “Suddenly Amish” explores what happens when outsiders immerse themselves in an Amish community in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The program tracks six individuals leaving behind their modern lifestyles to live according to Plain traditions, providing a unique look at a culture usually kept private.

The cast includes a California content creator, a luxury-loving rapper from Missouri, and a recently divorced father from Texas. Each participant gives up technology, electricity, and indoor plumbing, adjusting to the strict routines and traditions that define Amish life.

Viewers witness how these drastic lifestyle changes impact their daily routines, relationships, and personal decisions. Romance, cultural misunderstandings, emotional breakthroughs, and tough choices all surface as each individual questions whether the Amish way of life fits their personal journey.

Yet demographic trends tell another story. North America’s Amish population has grown from 233,000 in 2000 to nearly 411,000 in 2025, according to Elizabethtown College. High birth rates are the main driver of this increase, per the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies. Lancaster County alone is home to the nation’s largest Amish settlement, with more than 44,700 residents.

“Suddenly Amish” gives viewers a rare window into how outsiders navigate a world defined by simplicity, faith, and community. The series explores the realities, challenges, and personal transformations that come when modern convenience is replaced by tradition and structure.

By following six diverse participants, the show highlights how culture, faith, and family shape daily life—offering insights that most viewers rarely see firsthand.
